CURAÇAO POLICE FORCE (KPC)

“The Netherlands Antilles Police Force ceased to exist as a result of the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles as a country in 2010. Three (3) new police forces had to be established on Curaçao, Sint Maarten and the BES islands. In preparation for this , the Political Steering Group for Constitutional Changes in 2008 strengthened the task of achieving further professionalization and organization of the Antillean police forces.

With reference to article 7 of the “Consensus Kingdom Act Police Curaçao, Sint Maarten and BES” the task was assigned to provide a facility for a high-quality, professional police organization that can properly perform the police tasks of detection, observation, arrest and maintaining public order. This is how the Curacao Police Force came into being.
Article 46 of the Police Kingdom Act stipulates , that the Minister of Justice exercises the competent authority over the police force with regard to general policy and management. Thus, the Minister of Justice is responsible for the organization and maintenance of the police.

Articles 16 and 17 of the Police Act regulate under whose leadership the police are in the exercise of their duties. A distinction is made here between:
The enforcement of public order, the protection of persons and goods and the provision of assistance. With regard to these tasks, the police are under the authority and supervision of the Minister of Justice;
The criminal enforcement of the legal order and performing tasks in the service of justice. For with regard to these tasks, the police is under the authority and supervision of the Attorney General.
